In the anterior wall of the rectum, men can touch the prostate and women can touch the cervix. It should not be mistaken for pathological masses; pathological masses should not be mistaken for prostate or uterus. Differentiating the two requires certain clinical experience.
The prostate is located in front of the rectum, with two lobes and a central groove. Normal prostate is smooth and non-tender. If the tenderness is positive, there may be benign hyperplasia, infection or tumor. When palpating the prostate, the patient will make urine.
Rectal cancer can be felt with a hard mass, uneven or cauliflower-like surface, pus, necrotic tissue, and dark red blood. It may be accompanied by intestinal stenosis and dark red blood on the finger cot.
Rectal polyps can be palpable soft and moveable masses, finger cots may be blood stained, bright red.
Internal hemorrhoids are soft venous masses that are not easy to touch, but if thrombosis occurs, smooth induration can be felt.
Anal fistula can feel cord-like objects, and sometimes small induration can be palpated at the internal mouth of the anal fistula.
Perirectal abscesses such as pelvic and rectal space abscesses, retrorectal space abscesses, tender masses can be felt in the rectum, and may be accompanied by fluctuations.
Anal fissure and infection were severely tender during digital examination.
It should be pointed out that the proportion of low rectal cancer in China is very high, most of which can be touched by digital rectal examination, but the high position may not be touched. Therefore, those who cannot be touched do not necessarily have rectal cancer, and they have to go to a qualified hospital for further examination.
