The elderly are in the stage of decline, and all tissues, organs and their functions in the body are decreasing, and the anus is no exception. The characteristics of elderly anal diseases are easy constipation, easy prolapse of the anus, easy infection and so on.
1. Prevent constipation
Constipation is a common disease of the elderly, which often brings distress to them and causes some diseases. There are many reasons for constipation. As far as the elderly are concerned, the intestinal peristalsis is slow due to reduced activity; rectal muscle atrophy, weakened tension, and abdominal muscle loss, and weak bowel movements are the main reasons for constipation. In addition, some elderly people drink too little water, the food is too fine and the crude fiber is too little, resulting in smaller stool volume, longer residence time in the intestine, and excessive absorption of water in the stool. There are also constipation caused by systemic diseases (such as hypothyroidism).
Some elderly people pay too much attention to defecation and think that there must be one defecation every day, otherwise they will be anxious and nervous. This will cause gastrointestinal dysfunction and really cause constipation, which should be avoided.
Constipation in the elderly generally occurs gradually, which can be habitual long-term constipation or temporary. Drink a glass of warm water or light salt water every morning (about 300-400 ml). After drinking on an empty stomach, it can stimulate bowel movement and help defecation.
Second, prevent rectal prolapse
Elderly people have decreased sphincter function due to atrophy of the anal sphincter and other muscles, prone to anal prolapse. Anal prolapse is more obvious in patients with hemorrhoids. Some can prolapse after running or coughing. Hemorrhoid prolapse can cause swelling if incarcerated. Pain, difficulty walking, infection can cause general discomfort.
Those with anal prolapse should actively treat anal diseases such as hemorrhoids, and exercise to strengthen anal function.
Three, prevent infection
In the elderly, due to the atrophy of the thymus gland and the weakened immune function, the ability to produce antibodies to foreign antigens is reduced. Intestinal bacteria, etc. can cause peri-anorectal infection to form abscesses. At the same time, because the elderly body responds slowly, after the abscess is formed, the redness, swelling, heat and pain are not obvious, but it is easy to spread and cause systemic symptoms. The healing rate is relatively slow.
Anal itching is also a common symptom of the elderly, so pay attention to protection. Wash the anus with warm water frequently. Do not wash it with strong soap. When the itching is obvious, you can choose some mild ointment.
In addition, because most of the teeth of the elderly fall out, which affects the chewing function, when eating food, if you swallow hard objects, especially fish bones, they will get stuck in the anorectal area during stool and cause blood in the stool and pain. Therefore, you must chew slowly when eating, do not talk and laugh while eating, so as not to swallow fish bones, chicken bones, etc., and cause damage to the anus.
